The Poetics of Carol Muske and Joy Harjo :: Biography Biographies Essays
The Poetics of Carol Muske and Joy Harjo I began a study of autobiography and memoir writing several years ago. Recently I discovered two poets who believe that recording oneââ¬â¢s place in history is integral to their art. Carol Muske and Joy Harjo are renowned poets who explore the intricacies of self in regards to cultural and historical place. Muske specifically addresses the poetics of women poets, while Harjo addresses the poetics of minority, specifically Native American, writers. Both poets emphasize the autobiographical nature of poetry. Muske and Harjo regard the self as integral to their art. In this representation of self, Muske and Harjo discuss the importance of truth-telling testimony and history in their poetics. Muske says, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦testimony exists to confront a world beyond the self and the drama of the self, even the world of silenceââ¬âor the unanswerableâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Muske 16). Muske asks, ââ¬Å"The question of self, for a woman poetâ⬠¦is continually vexingâ⬠¦what is a womanââ¬â¢s self?â⬠(Muske 3). Women have historically had their self created for them by the patriarchal society in which they live, which leaves contemporary women wondering how to define a womanââ¬â¢s self at all. Even if they, as women, can create a self, how accurate is it? Muske muses on what is a truth telling self since a womanââ¬â¢s perception of truth is colored always by what the patriarchal society is telling her is truth. Muske says in her poem ââ¬Å"A Private Matterâ⬠, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦there are the words, dialogue of people you once became or notâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ . It is in these words that a woman finds herself, a poem of all the selves in a self, but not without a cost. In ââ¬Å"Epithâ⬠, Muske muses: You forget yourself with each glittering pin, each chip off the old rock, each sip of the long toast to your famous independence, negotiated at such costââ¬â and still refusing to fit. ââ¬Å"The inclination to bear witness seems aligned with the missing selfâ⬠(Muske 4). Women create the ââ¬Ëmissingââ¬â¢ self by telling their stories, not the stories that have been told to them by a male dominated society, but those stories that define that missing self. In so doing, Muske reiterates the statement James Olney makes when he says, ââ¬Å"... even as the autobiographer fixes limits in the past, a new experiment in living, a new experience in consciousness ... and a new projection or metaphor of a new self is under wayâ⬠(Olney).

Irp Lost and Found
In the story Lost and Found by Anne Scarf, There were many minor conflicts, but two major conflicts. The decisions the girls made to resolve the major conflicts lead to retaliation. One major conflict in the story was that Jamie, a 14 year old middle- school student, was dating a boy named Bobby Wallace, a high-school student, who wasn't a boy anyone would recommend talking to. Game's older sister, Dairy (who was also a high school student) tried to convince her younger sister that she wouldn't be socializing with him.The second major problem was the girl's father left them for 5 years, and now decides he wants to be a part of their lives. In the story, the youngest sister ran away because she was overwhelmed. They had no clue where she was, that's pretty much why I chose to make a missing persons t-shirt. When someone is missing, wearing t-shirts is a way good way to inform others that someone is missing. I added the books descriptions to describe Jamie and tried to raw a picture of how Jamie might look.In the story her father thought to look under a tree, which was where they found her. It was the last place she was happy. In all actuality, people don't think to look under a tree to find you, so I think the t-shirt idea would be useful. People evaluate your clothes every day and in real life, people wear t-shirt when someone is missing, or when someone dies. It catches other people attention and encourages them to help look.

American Beauty
There are numerous significant motives in the1999 film entitled American Beauty, directed by Sam Mendes. In this film, Lester Burnhamââ¬â a 42-year-old, depressed suburban father has a mid-life crisis and voluntarily decides to turn his chaotic life around after developing a fascination for his daughters attractive friend, Angela. Similarly, The title American Beauty is proven to be significant with the satirical lust between Lester and Angela , Lester realizing the beauty throughout his life sincerely, and the American beauty rose used as a symbol. This representation allows the director to ultimately suggest that everyone will see the beauty in America and their lives. In the movie American Beauty, the lust portrayed is shown very satirically and creates a deep affect on the characters throughout the film. For example, lust is illustrated when Lester notices Angela for the first time and feels instantly compelled to her. Which gives the allusion of beauty but ultimately is very disturbing because of Angelaââ¬â¢s age. Although, Lester suddenly feels the need to know Angela. Subsequently, after meeting her he says, ââ¬Å" Itââ¬â¢s the weirdest thing I feel like Iââ¬â¢ve been in a comma for about 20 years and Iââ¬â¢m just now waking upâ⬠(American Beauty). In stating this, Lester explains how he felt like he was living every day like the last and not really living at all until he met Angela. To elaborate, Lester states, ââ¬Å"The highlight of my day is masturbating in the showerâ⬠(American Beauty). By using the word ââ¬Å"highlightâ⬠sows that itââ¬â¢s the most arousing part of his day which he combines with masturbating. Although, after he meets Angela he feels as though he was ââ¬Å"waking upâ⬠for the first time (American Beauty). This feeling leads him to start working out, smoking weed, and working at his old teenage job in order to get Angela interested in him. Therefore, the lust shown between Lester and Angela depicts the title American Beauty because of the want or need to feel wanted and loved by someone. Lastly, Lester realizing the beauty in his life helps prove the implication of the title. With Lester feeling as if his life is pathetic and boring in the beginning of the film, to the end where he feels as though he is ââ¬Å"great. â⬠For example, Lester states, ââ¬Å" I am grateful for every moment in my stupid life ââ¬Å" (American Beauty). Meaning that Lester knew most times his life was ââ¬Å"stupid,â⬠although he still saw the beauty in everything. Lester sincerely finds the beauty in his life right before he is murdered and continues to after he dies. He says, ââ¬Å"I guess I could be pissed about what happened to me, but there is so much beauty in the worldâ⬠(American Beauty). Implying that he felt as though he could be mad that his life was taken from him, but he finally witnessed his daughter being happy and in love and realized that he truly still loved his wife. Therefore, he has no choice but to be thankful for the life he had been given. This strongly depicts the American beauty by allowing Lester to sincerely see beauty in his dysfunctional life. The rose called American beauty is introduced various times as a symbol throughout the film. The rose is presented satirically for the first time when Carolyn is trimming her American beauty rose bushes in the front yard. Everything seems to be perfect with the white picket fence and the suburban house-wife outside doing yard work. Although, like the rose, everything is beautiful at first glace, but when you look deeper you see the thorns and the dysfunction within the family. In addition, the American beauty rose is also introduced countless times while Lester is fantasizing about Angela. For example, the moment Lester spots Angela for the first time he imagines her undressing for him while being the only ones in an auditorium. She opens her shirt and vibrant rose pedals come flowing from her chest (American Beauty). This represents the beauty that he not only sees in her; though, also the beauty that she brings to his life. Which is portrayed to be very satirical because of his fanaticizing about Angela who is a young girl. Hence, the significance of the title American Beauty and the representation that is shown through the American beauty rose. Although, some may say that the American beauty rose is portrayed sincerely in the film. They might argue that at the end of the film, when Lester has just seen the beauty throughout his life, there is a vibrant bouquet of American beauty roses on the table in front of him. Showing the sincere feelings of beauty that Lester is realizing for the first time while looking at his family portrait. People can also argue that in the next scene where Lester has been killed the roses are suddenly blackened and dead. Also, the vivid red blood splattered around the flowers helps portray the lack of color and beauty in the roses it self. This sincerely shows the ugliness of deaths and the arrival of death when Lester had just recognized the beauty in his life. Therefore one may argue the American beauty rose is portrayed as sincere as well as satirical. Subsequently, this shows the representation of American Beauty allows the director to ultimately suggest that everyone will see the beauty in America and their lives. While every character in the film was dysfunctional they all came to a realization of the beauty in their lives at the end of the movie. Although each character didnââ¬â¢t have to loose their life to see the beauty, the murder of Lester allowed the beauty to be revealed and also enables the characters to have a somewhat epiphany. In conclusion, Janet Maslin, a film critic from the New York Times states, ââ¬Å"if you donââ¬â¢t feel the filmââ¬â¢s piercing vision of what really matters, someday you willâ⬠( 293). Therefore restating that everyone will see the beauty in the dysfunction of America someday before or after they die. How the World Was Made
Beginnings How The World Was Made Cheerokee, Retold by: James Mooney ââ¬Å"The earth is a great island floating in a sea of waterâ⬠Long time ago when everything was all water and suspended at the each of the four cardinal points by a cord hanging down holding the solid rock. When the earth grows old and dulls itââ¬â¢s strings will snap and the earth will sink down just to be water again. The Indians were afriad of that happening. There was all the animals above in the Galun'lati, the sky realm. They wanted more space and wondered what was below the water. The little water-beetle voluntered to seek what was below. He darted for every direction, but no firm place to rest. He went down under and gather mud, which ended up growing on every side until it because as to what we know call Earth. The animals were anxious to go down, they asked the birds to check if it wasnââ¬â¢t too wet and they said that it was still wet. Later, the Buzzard went down, he flew all other and got ve ry tired and his wings began to strike the ground making what we call moutains and the animals thought there would only be mountains so they called the Buzzard to come back. As it dried, it grew dark so they got the sun and set in a track to go around everyday at a specific time. They took the sun, but it was really hot so they pushed it a little further until it was the right temperature for them to look around. Under this newly found earth was another ââ¬â where plants grew and seasons were different. There were streams that came down the mountains. When the season would change the water grew warmer and warmer in the fall and in the winter things grew colder and colder. When the plants and animals were made they were told to watch and keep awake for several nights and only the owl, panther and one or two were given the ower to see and to go about in the dark and made the prey of birds and animals to sleep at night. As for the trees, it was the ceder, pine, spruce, holly and the laurel who were given to be always green and to be greatest for medicine. The rest had to lose their leaves every winter. There was only one boy and one girl until he struck her a fish and said to multiply and so she did, but very rapidly that they feared that the world wounldnââ¬â¢t keep up and then so it was made that a women should only have one child a year and so it has been ever since.

The negative effects of obesity on youth Research Paper
The negative effects of obesity on youth - Research Paper Example Being influenced by the popular culture and general perceptions, young people sometimes resort to dietary choices and leisure and recreation habits, which give way to weight gain and the related negative medical and emotional effects. However, the latest trend that is more alarming is the prevalence of obesity amongst the young people, giving way to not only a high susceptibility to life threatening diseases but also resulting in many debilitating emotional and psychological consequences and diseases, which have a drastic negative effect on the lives of young people. Statistics It is, indeed, an irony that diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disorders that are linked to obesity and were more prevalent in senior adults could today as likely be traced amongst the young people (ââ¬Å"Obesity Related Statistics in Americaâ⬠1). The proportion of young children and adolescents that could be technically considered as being obese is increasing ever more rapidly than before (à ¢â¬Å"Obesity Related Statistics in Americaâ⬠1). ... The figures that do solicit the attention of parents, schools and health services are the facts that convincingly lead to the conclusion that the incidence of obesity amongst the adolescents has expanded by four times in the last three decades (ââ¬Å"Obesity Related Statistics in Americaâ⬠1). This means that the young people today are four times more likely to suffer from obesity related diseases and psychological ailments than they were just 30 years ago. Possible Causes and Reasons for Obesity amongst Youth There is no denying the fact that the youth of today tends to eat more and leads a lifestyle that is quite different from the generations of yore (ââ¬Å"Americaââ¬â¢s Epidemic of Youth Obesityâ⬠1). The life of young people today is more prone to being sedentary and activities free (ââ¬Å"Americaââ¬â¢s Epidemic of Youth Obesityâ⬠1). Besides, going by the influx of virtual sources of entertainment, young people do prefer to spend much more time sitting b efore television sets, computers and video games rather than sweating it out on the playgrounds (ââ¬Å"Americaââ¬â¢s Epidemic of Youth Obesityâ⬠1). Societal changes have also to do with this propensity towards sedentary lifestyles and obesity. With two-income families and a rise in the number of single parent households, young people are more prone to consuming a higher degree of calories in the form of cheap fast foods and high calorie sugary drinks and sweets (ââ¬Å"Americaââ¬â¢s Epidemic of Youth Obesityâ⬠1). The augmenting number of activism and protests against the fast food chains such as Big Macs do say a lot as far as the task of accounting for rising obesity amongst the young people is concerned. In that context, young people hailing from low income

Code of Ethics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Code of Ethics - Essay Example Another ethical consideration involves the right to respect the patientââ¬â¢s wishes in relation their medical condition. This gives them the exclusive rights to make the decision that they want (Potter, 2005). In this situation, there are very many chances that are represented that would greatly hamper the process of arriving at the right decision. It is very difficult for a doctor to make a decision that would harm a patientââ¬â¢s life. This is because the sole duty of the care givers is to ensure that they do all that they can to rectify any situation that would harm the patient. The dilemma comes in when the practises that would increase the patientââ¬â¢s chances of survival are those that the patient is against. It will be very difficult to arrive at the right conclusion. Will it be right to treat Mr. E using all the channels that he did not consent to? It is also very difficult to watch his heath deteriorate. This creates a situation where private patient information i s given to people without the consent of the patient (Ribbens, 2005). It would be unethical for the doctor to put the patient on the ventilator. This is because this is a decision that lies solely with another party. It would be ethical for the brother to make the decision for the patient in respect to the ventilator. ... At the point of his decision making, he is considered as the voice of reason. He is also seen as the bridge between the doctor, their observations and what he has observed as the best possible choice for the patient. Autonomy in nursing is a very essential component. This is because it paves way and room for the nurse to employ all aspects of their acquired knowledge in their profession. The professional practise creates a situation where there should be room for the nurse to critically analyse a situation (Kockrow, 2003). Once they have done so, they are at liberty to make a decision which positively affects the patient. There are instances in the profession where the nurse does not require the ultimate permission to carry out certain practises. In many instances, the autonomy of practise is greatly hampered. This is especially so when issues of ethics are concerned. This practise is also greatly affected by the patientââ¬â¢s ultimate right to make a choice. As described above, a utonomy allows the nurse to make decisions on behalf of the patient. In such cases, the practise is without discretion to the patient or members of his or her family (Ribbens, 2005). Autonomy is greatly affected because it creates room for the nurse not to exercise their right. This is because the patient has his or her rights to stipulate what they want. This is in regard to treatment and other medical procedures. This limits the nurse or practitioner from what they what to do for the patient. In many instances, this is always the right thing (Kockrow, 2003). It is my obligation as the head nurse to report the provision of patientââ¬â¢s information to external sources. This is especially to someone who does not have exclusive rights to access the information or make any

What is global sourcing Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
What is global sourcing - Assignment Example Global sourcing is important due to the fact that it broadens the knowledge on how to conduct businesses in other countries (Schneid, 2010). In addition, global sourcing is always cheaper than producing the goods and services on oneââ¬â¢s own. Furthermore, global sourcing leads to reciprocating of trade. For instance, it ensures both buying as well as selling an organization at the same time (Sollish and Semanik, 2011). This leads to creation of a mutually beneficial economic bond between the companies involved in the transaction, as well as, create strong business relations between the countries involved. Global sourcing also allows a nation to tap into the raw materials of other nations, at lower costs under the cover of trade relations (Oshri and Global Sourcing Workshop, 2010). This is very beneficial if the buying nation has limited resources, or if it is in need of preserving its resources. These are some of the reasons as to why a company based in the United States would choose to purchase items and services from foreign
